Today, October 31, 2010 is the day we celebrate Halloween.
First I'll start with the origin of this fun filled holiday. (i feel like it ;p)
We have associated Halloween with images such as witches, vampires, skeletons, ghosts, spiders, bats, and the like. Activities such as trick or treat and Halloween costume parties are also in demand during Halloween celebrations. But what is Halloween and where did it originate?
According to Wikipedia, the word Halloween comes in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of All-Hallows-Even ("evening”) , that is, the night before All Hallows Day or more commonly known as "All Saints Day”. The images of Halloween are derived the works of Gothic and horror literature such as Frankenstein and Dracula. In addition, elements of the autumn season, such as pumpkins, corn husks, and scarecrows, are also prevalent.
The practice of trick or treat is believed to have come from the late medieval practice of souling, when poor folk would go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day (November 2). The word "trick” refers to "threat” to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.
Just thought you'd like to know! xD
I don't know about you but i'v always gone out and done dumb things on this wonderest holiday(yes i do things which even i think is dumb) and i'm not planning on stopping the tradition! :p
Hope everyone has a spooky sweet filled halloween!
